Divina De Campo: “We Didn’t Vote For An Austerity Government”

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ legend Divina de Campo gives their thoughts on Labour’s first eight months in government.

Ever since appearing on the first-ever season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, Divina de Campo has become one of the LGBTQ+ community’s fiercest advocates – not least because of her political activism.

During a recent appearance on the PoliticsJOE podcast, the star expressed her disdain at Labour’s first eight months in government, branding Keir Starmer “liar-in-chief”.

“They’re nuts, they’re absolutely crackers,” she said, referring to the highly controversial benefit cuts that were recently announced.

“Inequality keeps getting bigger in this country, and it’s because we’ve put the burden for most of the problems, so the 2007, 2008 crash, who paid for that? Not the people who instigated, not the people who caused it, not the people at the top, all the people at the bottom.”

She further described this as “a class warfare against the worst off in the country,” which Labour is “continuing” after 14 years of Tory rule.

Divina also discussed the ongoing issue of LGBTQ+ venues shutting down, which she said is part of the wider cost of living issues across the country.

“If you look around London, LGBTQ+ bars are closing down at an extraordinary rate,” she explained.

“And it’s because of that, because the rents are so high and yet the wages have not kept anywhere close to the rise in the cost of living, so nobody has any disposable income.

“So where you would, you know, before you would go out and you would spend £30 on a Friday night, £30 on a Saturday night, you might only now be spending £50 a month, which means that then those bars have lost £100 and £200 revenue every single month – and that’s because people just can’t afford to go out anymore.”

Elsewhere, Divina discussed Donald Trump’s first few months in power, what she thinks of the UK’s various political leaders, and how she remains hopeful that things can change for better.
